Solid Wood - Hand Turned

As the lathe begins to spin, the world outside fades away. There’s only the wood and me, connected in a dance as old as time. The whirring sound of the lathe blends with the distant calls of birds, creating a symphony that guides my movements. My hands, guided by years of experience, move with a precision that feels almost instinctual, shaping the wood, releasing its hidden beauty.

Historic Replica Wood Turnings

As I step into my workshop, nestled in the shadows of the Blue Ridge Mountains just outside Charlottesville, the familiar scents of the fresh growing woods outside and dried wood shavings inside fills my senses. I am instantly grounded to the present moment and my carpenter ancestors. The lathe, my tool for this artistic journey, stands ready, a invitation to spin up the music of the day’s meditation.

Selecting a piece of wood is a ritual in itself. Each piece, unique in its grain and texture, speaks of the history of the mountains, of rains and suns it has witnessed. Today, I choose a piece of african mahogany, its rich, reddened warm tones resonating with the early morning light filtering through the windows.  A sip of coffee while watching the turkey’s dry the dew from their feathers feels so right to my Virginia Hillbilly roots

Made To Order from Virginia

As the lathe begins to spin, the world outside fades away. Only the wood speaks to me, connected to the immediate danger of a tool that will take my finger in an instant. The whirring sound of the lathe blends with my breath creating a focused symphony of precision movements. My hands, guided by years of experience, move that precision up and down feeling almost instinctual, shaping the wood to the exact pattern.

Turning wood on a lathe is more than a craft; it’s a form of meditation that if you rush will ruin many a piece of stock. Each curl of wood that spirals away is a reminder of the impermanence of life, of the constant cycle of creation and transformation. The wood’s resistance and surrender under the tools mirror the ebb and flow of thoughts in my mind, allowing me to reach a state of Zen-like focus.

Virginia Historic Replica Turnings

The mountains, visible through my workshop’s open door, stand as silent witnesses supporting this meditative practice. I am tuned in to the enduring nature of our existence and my grandfather’s who raised the barns and decorated the homes of Virginia for the last few hundred years. The quality of the materials I work with, each piece a fragment of a former project being reused imbues my creations with a soul, a story. The intricate connection we grow from the world around us.

There’s a rhythm in turning wood, a harmony that aligns with the natural rhythms of the earth. The mountains, with their changing colors and moods, are a constant source of inspiration and backdrop to our shop. They remind me that just like the wood that takes new shapes under my hands, we too are capable of transformation and growth.

Turned Wood Made to Order

Hours pass without notice, as the stack of finished pieces grow behind me. The piece on the lathe slowly takes form, evolving from a rough block into a fitted form. The satisfaction of creating something beautiful, functional, and lasting is profound. It’s a connection not just to the material, but to the tradition of craftsmanship, to the history embedded in the wood, and to the serene beauty of the mountains that encompass my workshop.

As the day comes to an end, and the lathe falls silent, I step back to admire the finished pieces. In its curves and smoothness, I see not just my work, but the journey of the wood, from the heart of the mountains to the heart of someone’s home. This connection, this cycle of life and art, is the essence of my daily meditation, a reminder of the beauty and interconnectedness of all things.

Heartpine texture kitchen detail photos

Gepetto attempts to stand out in our kitchen details

We design our kitchens to expose the beauty in the materials and fabricate them by hand from reclaimed lumber to allow the natural processes of aging to show in the finished product.

Hand turned pedestals reveal the long and varied natural grain of the heart pine through the arc’d design.  The solid wood joinery is exposed on the drawer facing showing the sidegrain of the heart pine, as well as the depth of quality in the joinery that will last for generations.

Our wood craftsmen hand pick the naturally aged barnwood and match it for grain, size and color across each of the cabinet panels for the most pleasing results.

The crown molding topping this free standing cabinet shows the insect damage in some of the reclaimed woods from this property.  Since the barn that was torn down to renovate this kitchen was on the same property, all the aging elements become the story of the new construction.  We chose to use the dotted pieces in the crown molding as they add interest, while the wide vertical faces of the cabinets feature clean uninterrupted wood grain.  The handmade attention to detail here can be easily missed, so we’ll just point it out for you to take in slowly as you shop contractors for your custom kitchen remodel.

Country Chic style created by reclaimed barn wood

Custom Woodworking for summer vacation home : Country Chic Style by Virginia Craftsmen Gepetto Millworks. Have Gepetto design and build your kitchen, dining and wood paneling to meet your budget and your design aesthetic! Here we used reclaimed barn wood for the kitchen/dining area walls to bring together the front hall and original wood floors that were refinished in renovation.

Renovate your historic property with the organic look and feel of ‪#‎reclaimed ‬lumber on the walls, floors or as purpose built furniture! In this property tour you can see how the ‪#‎CountryChic‬ elements blend together with the weathered and faded walls built by Gepetto from an old barn. The country farm house kitchen was built by the space conscious farmer of the 19th century. To bring it to modern standards, our ‪#‎Kitchen‬ ‪#‎Designer‬ brought the small space between the stove, sink and fridge out into the dining room by adding the cart style island allowing the chef to determine the cooking space, or entertaining space with the roll of the casters. Gepetto built the family length dining table to fit the space using solid wood joinery. We fashioned a clock from the same reclaimed panels and tied together the staircase, sitting room, and dining area using the reclaimed paneling. If you are looking to source a medium or large project, give us a call @ (804) 938-2094 and chat about your specific needs, and we’ll scour the rich ‪#‎virginia‬countryside for the right ‪#‎reclaimedlumber‬ for the job.

Through the eyes of a wood craftsman

What do you see in this picture?

Old dilapidated barn used for reclaimed lumber

An old dilapidated barn?  Well of course!!! But through the eyes of a skilled Craftsman, you see an outdoor aging process ripe for picking.

Wood can be like wine, getting better with age.  The age shows itself in the richer colors in the wood-grain, the character marks and weather stains.

Do you love the natural and inviting look of wood? Then you’ll love our unique kitchen and living space designs made from reclaimed lumber.

What is reclaimed lumber?

Wood that isn’t rotten, is reusable – reclaiming it from it’s first build is a great way to recycle, but can also give your project a unique look in one of two ways:

  1. The Aging Process: produces unique defects, accentuates grain color and contrast
  2. Unique Trees: modern lumber comes from trees grown for cutting, whereas 100 year old wood from barns, and buildings was lumber harvested from naturally grown trees – giving a different and amazing rich contrast that young trees just can not do. If you are looking to give your Barn a new life. Let us help with you ideas.
