Matt Wiley has 20+ years of experrience building historic homes and large scale commercial restoration projects. Matthew’s father taught and trained him in the carpentry and building trades from 12 years old and on. As his father was a general foreman builing residential homes Matt was trained in lumber calculation for project management in his early teens. Time saving job order, and the use of custom made ‘jigs’ to speed repetitive tasks was taught and practiced from Matt’s formative years. Matt moved from the rural hills of western virginia to Richmond’s most historic district – Church Hill before it was popular. Building the late 90’s and early 2000’s in Church Hill Matthew found a severe shortage in historically accurate building materials that caused a project management problem in restoring the row houses of the 19th century. From balusters to windows, historically correct materials where nearly unavailailable and using vinyl windows in a beautiful 3 story six digit home just did not keep the aestetic alive.
And in a beautiful turn of fate Matthew had the opportunity to buy “Beckstoffer’s Millwork” at 1207 N 28th Street in the early 2000’s. At that point the facility was 100 years old and many of the tools and records were still in tact. The formative experience of a lifelong craftsman was now turned to the speciaty that provides a lifetime of challenge and project variety. Throughout the real estate boom and urban return of the 2000’s Matthew ran a shop of 20+ employees supplying everything from basic kitchens to historic retrofits of much of Tobacco Row warehouse conversions. In the full market stop of the financial crisis of 09; Matthew’s operation had to re-size with the rest of the industry and it was the demand for historically accurate building supplies that carried Matthew’s interest, as well as cashflow.

The 1. Custom Moulding Profiles
Moulding is a strip of material used to cover transitions between surfaces and/or provide decorative lines. Common types like crown moulding at the top of a wall are considered a ‘luxury’, or baseboards connsidered essential to cover the variances in the flooring to wall joints. IF you’ve never heard the term “chair rails” you’d be looking at a strip of moulding at the height of the back of a chair. The feature of a chair rail or wainscoting breaks up the surface of the wall in 1/3, or by the golden mean for a pleasant feature. Paint colors above tend to be lighter, and below tend to be darker bringing a dimensional feel to a room.
You can install trim in any room of the home, though certain types of moulding are reserved for specific areas such as ‘casing’ the term for moulding around a window. Gepetto can produce custom molding profiles in solid wood allowing for a clear coat or stain to bring out the grain details in the wood species. If you are renovating a home, moulding is a first choice in providing higher levels of finishing and design than the house was built with.
2. Built-in Furniture
Built-in furniture grows in popularity and wanes against other trends but because it makes clever use of the available space we feel it is a timeless choice! Avoid the need to invest in new furniture which is often of lower quality construction. Popular built-in furniture ideas would include:
bookshelves
day bed, or window bed
entry way cabinetry or closet space
wine storage racks or cases
work from home desks
window seat with trunk
Built in millwork gives a space the initial intention that can really transform it. Entry way built in nooks for coats can really help minimize the clutter of life that piles up if space isn’t made for each item.
3. Ceiling Medallions
Decorative ceiling medallions are a nearly forgotten option but the warmth of wood can be a centerpiece of lighting. Your room design will benefit from the otherwise ignored ceiling which a beautiful medallion or frame can showcase a hanging chandelier or light fixture with stained glass or shadow casting openings.
4. Wall Paneling
Wall paneling, or wainscoting if it comes up to waiste height, is a common way to design your walls for variety. Walls are generally flat and boring, spice it up with wood grain and pull that grain element into a table to match. Wainscoting dresses up the walls using wood paneling on the lower third, or half depending on the ceiling height. You can add a victorian finial supported shelf at the top of your wall to display items or mount a sound system. Paneling can cover wiring and media system elements to create a theater room that doesn’t look like it was made for Star Trek. Gepetto does not produce plywood, but we do produce the unique elements that will tie your room together around windows, or a fireplace.

COMPLEX ARTISTIC FITTINGS AND FURNISHINGS FOR RESTAURANTS
We’re here in Washington DC finishing up install cleanup at M street and 11 th for Supra Restaurant. The restaurant’s beginning is an interesting story in innovation starting on Kickstarter and finished with quality craftsmanship from Gepetto. The inspiration of a foreign chef formerly with the Georgian embassy come together to form a restaurant titled “Supra” which was originally crowd funded on Kickstarter by Laura and Jonathan the visionaries shepherding the vision into existence.
The textured interior design featuring so much rich wood grain on this project was Tom Mulhern at 2 Scales and his 20 plus years of experience designing for restaurant interiors brings to life creative circular square objects the sturdy timelessness of full grain hardwoods. Gepetto produced the CAD drawings into beautifully finished hardwood booths, tables, planters and service stations featured in the photo’s & video.
In a restaurant landscape of increased franchise conglomeration, we feel you have a greater opportunity to distinguish yourself and provide the small creature comforts we all seek in a mid-day reprise for a cup of coffee or a sandwich.
In the competitive restaurant industry, the atmosphere is almost as crucial as the menu. Today’s establishments are keenly focused on offering not just excellent food but also an unforgettable experience. The trend is towards complex artistic fittings and furnishings, which play a pivotal role in creating a vibrant, engaging ambiance for diners.
Why Complex Artistic Fittings and Furnishings?
Artistic fittings and furnishings are increasingly recognized for their power to transform the aesthetic and feel of a restaurant. These intricately designed elements offer more than just utility; they provide a visual feast for patrons, serving as conversation starters and enhancing the overall dining experience. With complex, artistic pieces, restaurants can craft a unique identity, making their spaces memorable and distinct.
Craftsmanship at its Finest
Complex artistic fittings require a masterful hand and a keen eye for detail. Skilled craftsmen spend hours, often days, meticulously shaping, carving, and assembling each piece. The process is elaborate, involving various techniques to bring out the beauty and character of the materials used, typically wood and metal. These craftsmen often incorporate traditional methods while also embracing innovative technologies to achieve precision and complexity in their designs.
A Blend of Functionality and Art
Artistic furnishings aren’t merely about aesthetics; they seamlessly meld form with function. These pieces are designed considering the practical needs of a restaurant while not compromising on their visual appeal. For instance, tables might be crafted to offer the optimum dining space while featuring elaborate designs and patterns that elevate their look. Chairs are constructed to provide comfort for extended periods, all while being visual masterpieces in their own right.
Tailoring to Themes
Complex artistic furnishings are often tailored to resonate with the theme or cuisine of a restaurant. Whether it’s a modern, minimalist vibe or a more classic, opulent look, these fittings are customized to align with and enhance the desired ambiance. For restaurants offering international cuisines, fittings might reflect cultural motifs and traditional designs, providing diners with a taste of the culinary journey they are about to embark upon.
Investment in Durability
These intricate fittings are not just about immediate impact; they are investments in the restaurant’s future. Crafted from high-quality materials and treated to withstand the wear and tear of busy restaurant life, these pieces are built to last. Their timeless designs ensure that they remain relevant and captivating, contributing to the restaurant’s appeal for years to come.
Creating Signature Spaces
With artistic fittings and furnishings, restaurants can create signature spaces that set them apart from the competition. These areas, often Instagram-worthy, become focal points for marketing and social media sharing, helping to attract a wider audience. Signature spaces imbued with art and complexity offer guests not just a meal, but an experience worth sharing and remembering.

PREAPPROVED hand crafted details
To finish the fences in an historically authentic look and feel, Gepetto Craftsmen used hand cut templates emulating the mistakes a 1700’s carpenter might have made in the process of fashioning hundreds of newell posts. The post tops are cut from solid pieces just like 200 years ago. However, our craftsmen are accustomed to 21st century levels of detail and repeatability and work with some of the highest quality machine tools – to produce the same result craftsmen working with steel that had only been tempered by a blacksmith 200+ years ago. The post tops were cut with varying templates to give a pre-approved – hand fashined look and feel allowing the museum historians as much input as possible in their final product.
The process: 1. Call Matthew, and talk through your needs (click to call) – good old fashioned customer service by a master craftsman. Ask us about our proprietary laminate system for building enhanced engineered solid wood beams to last in the mid-atlantic humidity and heat. Ask about the latest high efficiency and energy conserving coated glass technologies from Solar Eclipse when you specify them to prevent UV damage indoors and provide that energy efficient envelope saving you cooling costs. Ask Matthew about anything else he would consider. 2. We will do a site visit to examine your rot or any structural problems that may be occuring (if applicable). With photos and measurements from your existing structure we take your rough sketch and make it into a “shop drawing” – which is a specific architectural drafting that accounts for the special assembly needs of wood. The shop drawing is drafted by our specifically trained engineering architect to account for the structural characteristics of responsible solid wood construction. Your deposit accounts for the drawings, and purchase of the specific species of wood to build your door.

3. Your lumber hits the shop, and our experienced craftsmen guide your wood from rough hewn lumber into finely trued finished members. It may appear to be an easy process, but the grain structure of the lumber can cause warping, curvature, and stress deformations over time if not accounted for. A factory door does not account for the hidden shape of the wood used to build your door. So if you’re finding that your brand new home’s door is no longer shutting in the first long humid stretch of the summer, well – that’s likely why. A door in direct sunlight can hit surface temperatures over 200F which is enough to boil water and so the temperature gradient alone is enough to warp an internally unstable beam. 3. Experienced craftsmen will be out to install your door. Finish carpentry only works in three dimensions and 3 cubed makes for a lot of variables that can trip up the inexperienced, so our craftsmen come out to handle it.

During the Gothic period, builders found that pointed arches could make structures with amazing power and stability. The architectural designer builders experimented with changing steepness the arch had presented the solution that pointed arches pushed out less than spherical arches. Italian designer and engineer Mario Salvadori (1907–1997 ). “the important difference between Romanesque and Gothic arches rests in the sharp structure of the latter, which, besides presenting the new artistic concept, has the significant result of reducing the arch thrusts by as much as fifty percent.”
Arched wood doors may take almost any kind of room to the next level of creative space. Whether the designing architect uses the arch in the window or the door we have built great results in a half moon light above a rectangular door as well as a half circle light built into the door matching the arc of the top. Wood arch patterns are referred to in architectural styles from ‘free arch’ – means it follows no mathematical center to ‘true arch’ – meaning 180-degree half round with center at the same as the horizontal plane. Dig into architectural history and you’ll find Gothic arches, Tudor arches, oval arches, and throne arch styles. Think large doors for larger openings and a skilled architect will want to split the arch bridge at center of the two doors creating a lovely split opening. Get funky and modern and you can split the arch unevenly creating all sort of fabrication challenges for us in the shop. Don’t worry, we like variety and will solve all of the joinery in our shop-drawings that you will have the chance to approve before we plane out the planks in the species needed.
Arched Door Builder from historic Virginia
The arches used in Romanesque architecture are nearly always semicircular, for openings such as doors and windows, for vaults and for arcades. Wide doorways are usually surmounted by a semi-circular arch, except where a door with a lintel is set into a large arched recess and surmounted by a semi-circular “lunette” with decorative carving. the Romans also used a curved arch to create an illusion of symmetry. We have designed media rooms with a Romanesque feel that uses solid wood paneling to achieve modern amenities like a ginormous 4k media screen with neo-classical fit and finish in line with the exterior elements of the stately Virginia homes in the Fan of Richmond. The semi-circular doors sometimes have a central jamb to support the load or provide extra security. We offer molding productions services to further fit and finish the residential or commercial space with unique and timeless wood craftsmanship.

In an interesting historic note on the artch, throughout Maya sites, you’ll come across gateways and doorways that look somewhat like an arch, but which are structurally quite different. You are witnessing a corbelled vault! Builders of at least some Maya sites were familiar with a true arch (they were used here and there, largely in underground construction), yet corbelled vaults were used in the majority of cases, despite their drawbacks. A corbel vault’s construction set’s it apart by offsetting successive courses of stone at the spring line of the walls so that they project towards the archway’s center from each supporting side, until the courses meet at the apex of the archway (often capped with flat stones). For a corbelled vault covering the techniques is extended in three dimensions along the lengths of two opposing walls. The best set of drawings of the diverse range of shapes and sizes of corbel vaults can be found in the Sylvanus Morley book “The Ancient Maya”. A corbel arch (or corbeled / corbelled arch) is an arch-like construction method using a more primitive the stone mason technique of corbeling to span a space or void in a structure, such as an entrance-way.
Corbel arches constructed by offsetting successive courses of stone (or brick) at the springline of the walls so that they project towards the archway’s center from each supporting side. The angle of the arch limited by the size of the material until the courses meet at the apex. Although an improvement in load-bearing efficiency over the post and lintel, corbeled arches are not entirely self-supporting structures, and the corbeled arch is sometimes termed a false arch for it’s mechanical flaws. Unlike “true” arches the structure’s tensile stresses (caused by the weight of the materials) forming the arch are transformed into compressive stresses. Corbel arches and vaults require significantly thickened walls and an abutment of to fill to counteract the effects of gravity, which otherwise would tend to collapse each side of the archway inwards. But as a modern door design, that harkens back to the primitive roots it can be an inspiring shape of a false arch. Arched door builder in Richmond can add a point or other decorative rounding
Within the modern building industry of 2020, door panels without any framing are referred to as “slabs.” Residential entry door slabs are primarily manufactured in wood, insulated steel, and fiberglass. Vinyl entry doors are also available, as are doors produced with other composite materials. Interior doors are most commonly made of wood, but rarely of solid wood. The arched door builder most commonly features a hollow core and a face or skin of veneer. Unfortunately, these doors are only as good as their adhesives – which technically are very cheap. Yes, it’s easier to CNC route an arc into a ‘high grade’ of high density particle board – but if you’re looking for the traditional craftsman who is going to align the grain of a solid plank for solid block mortise and tennon joining – then give us a call for your needs. There’s simply no comparision – nor solid feel – as a door made cleanly from wood who’s cells grew molecular bonds with each other for a few decades.
Aesthetics drive the use of wood for doors and windows in commercial, institutional, and multifamily construction projects. According to the Window & Door Manufacturers Association a trade association representing over 145 U.S. and Canadian manufacturers and suppliers of windows and doors, wood is “highly versatile due to its botanical structure, composition, and properties. As a material, it has high strength in relation to its weight, high heat- and electrical-insulating properties, and desirable acoustical properties.” But that language itself doesn’t convey the aesthetic beauty of a deep thud of your arched wood door we built shutting firmly fitted in its frame. The solid wood aesthetic grows from the roots up as we craft and shape your custom door from a solid plank. We use the most modern of tools to be time and cost efficient in the manufacture of your wood door – but we continue to honor the strength of truth of the grain and species of the lumber you specify for your door.
We are a custom arched wood door and frame manufacturer that refuses to use computer aided machining but specialises in constructing custom strong wood doors that old fashioned way – by hand. Improve the appearance of the interior or exterior of your home, office or restaurant with hand carved entryways made by professional craftsmen and inspired by the past.
