The modern-day workspace has changed dramatically from the old miles of rows of cubicles surrounded by private executive offices and conference rooms.
You no longer step off the elevator into a dull lobby with the ordinary finishes of the past. Today, businesses want open areas where employees can collaborate
and share ideas and information. They want bright, loud spaces that inspire excitement and innovation. Employees no longer gather around the water cooler,
they gather around the coffee bar or in the lounge or café. Demand for talented employees is fierce, and tenant interior spaces are being designed to offer
comforts and amenities that you would not have dreamed of seeing in a work place years ago.
Businesses have focused their attention on creating workspaces that are designed for the employee and have hired the top architects and designers to do so.

The country charm of the rolling blue ridge hills opens in to a delightfully designed 19th century farmhouse. The reclaimed barnwood used for paneling has dated period newspaper adhered to the finish for an authentic dated feel. Gepetto Craftsmen finished the kitchen counters with solid walnut counter tops, contrasting with bright white finish on the cabinetry. Joining the small kitchen space to the dining room is a custom butcher block style countertop. We crafted a solid wood live or raw edge dining table with three inch thick hardwood top. Solid wood counter tops in the bathroom and other antique chic features unify the rooms throughout the house. Richmond Custom Kitchen Builder Services.
Reclaimed Barnwood for Wall Paneling
You’ll notice the wall paneling in many rooms was speckled with period newspapers which we found while cleaning out the walls. To build the legend of the house, as well as period color to the walls we ripped and pasted sections into the old boards as we sealed them for final install. The pant chips are authentic and the final patina a priceless touch that both unifies the rooms while adding unique details that are worth bending over to read. If you are designing a country house look and feel contact us to discuss techniques to build the story, legend and look in your finished project.
We have brought the unique texture and feel of reclaimed wood installations to office space construction, creative restaurant building, hospitality spaces in hotels, and rustic bar fabrication. If you have a barn on your property you would like to convert it to furnishings for your kitchen cabinets, tables, wall coverings or any other design elements for your new construction drop us a note to start your project.
“…all the wood exposed to view when the building is completed. This includes residential and commercial cabinetry (kitchens, baths, storage, offices, closets), doors, windows, stairs, paneling, trim, and shelving. Almost everything made of wood, built into or attached to the interior of a building.”
Architectural mill work is not limited to built-in to a structure. It can be a free-standing piece such as a rolling kitchen island or a external decoration or visual frame for a door or window. Architectural millwork can be either stock “off-the-shelf”, semi-custom, or custom. If a builder is hoping to create a unique style for a home mill work is the easiest way to stand apart as the off the shelf trim and kitchen types are so uniform they loose personality.
Exterior architectural millwork is not part of the interior of a building. It can include exterior trim, balusters, gable decorations, and columns . Exterior millwork add visual interest to the outside of a structure and so they acquire the architectural label. In times past the craft of home building was more individualized and filled with detail. Gepetto craftsmen have renovated and restored hundreds of Richmond and Virginia historic projects bringing the detail and charm back from gilded age homes.
The history of America beats from the heart of VA, particularly during the pre-Colonial period. Jamestown Virginia was founded in 1607 and was credited as the first permanent English settlement in North America while Henricus was even earlier, but was moved due to flooding. The surrenders ending both the American Revolution (Yorktown) and the Civil War (Appomattox) occurred in Virginia. The state is called the “Mother of Presidents” because eight U.S. presidents were born there. The colony nearly failed until tobacco emerged as a profitable export. It was grown on plantations, using primarily indentured servants for the intensive hand labor involved. The Virginia Colony became the wealthiest and most populated British colony in North America, with an elected General Assembly. The colony was dominated by rich planters who were also in control of the established Anglican Church. Baptist and Methodist preachers brought the Great Awakening, welcoming black members and leading to many evangelical and racially integrated churches. Virginia planters had a major role in gaining independence and in the development of democratic-republican ideals of the United States. They were important in the Declaration of Independence, writing the Constitutional Convention (and preserving protection for the slave trade), and establishing the Bill of Rights. The state of Kentucky separated from Virginia in 1792. [source: WikiPedia]
Wooden Window Restoration VA
Is our specialty because there are so many rich layers of history that can be preserved in architecture. Gepetto builds to order or repairs existing window frames, casings and sashes so that you can receive historic tax credits for your renovation or building budget.
Wood Grain Counter tops may be the cure for the common cold of stainless steel everything kitchens. Showy stones like high maintenance granite and marble and maintenance-free engineered materials like quartz and epoxy-solid surfaces are trying to take over. But we are supplying the resurgence in natural wood countertops. Constructed from specially cured and joined pieces of hardwood laminated with specialty adhesives for strength and moisture stability, they provide a warm organic palette to paint the rest of the kitchen elements with historic accuracy, or modern panache. Wood is wonderfully forgiving, gentle on dishware, and able to absorb or mitigate the noise of busy household chores. Wooden counter tops can be expertly serviced if damaged, dinged, stained, or gouged, our craftsmen are ready to make any needed refreshments.

Solid Wood Construction
Unlike stone, steel or resin, there’s no clatter when you set down a plate or a glass, and dropped dishes are less likely to break. Wood also absorbs and dampens the whir of appliances, while the sound will travel through or be amplified by other more rigid materials. Are Wood Grain Counter tops something you’ve seen this week, this month, this year? Have you ever been in a kitchen or conference room that has used them? If your answer is no then it’s so unique that you’ve never personally viewed it – your kitchen, or your office conference room will be that unique an experience for the people visisiting.
Wooden Countertops blend well into other rooms and look more like furniture than fabricated materials.
Wood grain is created by the cambium growing rapidly at the beginning of each growing season, generating light colored springwood between the darker lines. As the tree grows in the warmer summer it slows down and produces darker summerwood. Later growth shows in the structure as more dense and harder than the early springwood. The tree’s growth each year follows the weather turning cold so the cambium becomes dormant in the cycle producing distinctive growth rings if you’re looking at a bi-lateral view of the tree’s structure. So to create the long grain effects we use in countertop and cabinet finishes we slice the trunk of the tree in the same direction the tree grew. The overall width of the tree growth is important but the grain slope is important as we cut and kiln dry the piece for your home. Solid Wood Door Restoration & Refinishing VASolid Wood Door Restoration & Refinishing VA
Wood entry door restoration and refinishing contractors usually start with stripping old paint or finishes. Rotten wood may be stabilized and patched with epoxy, or new wood elements patched in. Cracked and split wood panels may be replaced, hardware and art glass restored or replicated, fit of the doors adjusted, and new finishes applied.
Save thousands of dollars by refinishing your doors rather than buying new ones. Commercial Doors require a specialized knowledge to preserve the quality and provide a durable finish that will stand up to both weather and customer abuse. Many times this requires a small annual charge for ongoing maintenance by us once the doors are refinished. This way they always look beautiful and maintenance is always less expensive than a total refinish.
A wood-consolidant (also known as wood stabilizer) will be used to strengthen the wood fibers of the rotted areas and return some of the wood’s structural integrity. For large areas of damage, consider replacing the damaged wood with a new section of wood. For smaller areas of damage and doors to be repainted as in this project, remove any loose or dry-rotted pieces. Sand the door as needed. For a door to be finished as natural wood, completely remove every bit of paint and sand thoroughly. For a door to be repainted, sand rough spots until the door is smooth and ready for paint.
For areas of soft wood (nearly dry-rotted), use a rotted-wood stabilizer. Use a chisel or scraper to remove any badly rotted areas or old wood filler (Image 1).
Apply the stabilizer (Image 2) according to the manufacturer’s instructions and let it dry until the wood hardens.
Sand down the paint around the damaged area to bare wood. Remove any dust.
Using a polyester or epoxy resin filler, fill the damaged area to the surface and cover any voids (Image 3). This will harden to a tough surface ideal for attaching the hardware screws. Allow the filler to harden as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
Sand the finish surface smooth. First use a flat rasp, then rough-grade sandpaper and finally with finishing grade sandpaper.
A longtime fixture in the architectural woodwork industry, Gepetto Millworks has been recognized throughout its 20-year history for many of its high-profile projects around Richmond. “Millwork” refers to the stuff traditionally made in a mill. Items such as base trim, crown molding, interior doors, door frames, window casing, chair rails and wood paneling are all examples of millwork. These items are all cut and created from raw lumber – in a sawmill – thus, giving them the umbrella term “millwork.” Millwork may also include decorative products, such as mantels and door casings. Millwork can be made from common woods such as pine and oak, but it may also include uncommon woods such as fir, poplar, hickory and maple. Some manufactured wood products also have a high enough density to be used for millwork, such as MDF. Millwork products only need nails, screws or adhesives to be installed, which makes using them easy and convenient. Millwork can be at standard lengths and can be stained or painted.
Architectural millwork does not have to necessarily be built-in to a structure. It can be a free-standing piece such as this rolling kitchen island (pictured right) that South Shore Millwork built for a home on the South Shore. Not to mention architectural millwork can be either stock (“off-the-shelf”), semi-custom, or custom such as what South Shore Millwork provides.

According to Remodeling Magazine, the average home-office renovation runs $187.50 per square foot. This includes new cabinetry, countertops, added storage space, new carpeting, new drywall and modernized electrical wiring. You can find square footage by multiplying the length of a room by its width. Example: a 12-foot-by-12-foot room amounts to 144 square feet. The cost for renovation using Remodeling Magazine’s average figure would be 144 times $187.50, or $27,000.
Now, the walls are coming down. Driven by changing work styles, mobile technology, and the growing presence of Millennials—people born between the early 1980s and 2000—today’s workplaces are changing, mostly for the better. Perimeter offices are disappearing, floor plans are opening up, and trendy breakout areas and cafés are replacing the rigid, closed layouts of the past, says Barry Fries, founder and CEO of contractor B.R. Fries & Associates. “More than ever, we see young companies owned or dominated by Millennials gravitating toward historic downtown buildings, where they’re installing sustainable, laid-back interiors with adaptable furniture systems and a surprisingly high finish quality,” he says.
Leaky and inefficient windows, skylights, and glazed doors account for more than 25 percent of the average household’s energy bills, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. You can cut energy costs by as much as 15 percent by buying windows with double-pane insulated glass, heat-resistant coatings, airtight frames, and/or Energy Star ratings. Naturally, our green inner child aspires to do our fair share in preserving our environment… not to mention our wallets. Saving a bundle on utility costs and receiving a bundle back from Uncle Sam seemed like a delightful no – brainer for many thousands. For them, wasting valuable time and money by putting off needed home improvements was simply no longer an option. Thousands of others, however, remained skeptical and are still putting off the inevitable. Perhaps they just aren’t convinced that their windows really need replacing. Or maybe, they just don’t know which window company to trust or even where to begin. You’ll want to look at our option for using Accoya Acetelated wood to extend the weather beating characteristics of the wood itself.

Although there are many fine reputable window manufacturers to choose from, homeowners also need to beware of start-up companies or companies who are taking shortcuts. Of course, all companies were start-up companies at one time. Nevertheless, new figures from Insolvency Journal reveal that four companies a day went belly up in the first seven months of 2010, up 22% from the same time in 2009. We’ve seen window companies go out of business, change their names, and reopen. We’ve seen companies like Republic and Kensington declare bankruptcy, potentially leaving customers holding the bag with worthless warranties and un-serviced windows. We’ve seen no fewer than 17 major window manufacturing corporations file for Chapter 11 in the last 3 years. The construction industry is rife with short term pop-up companies who loose money and close. Gepetto has been operating under Matthew Wiley’s guidance supporting his six children for the last 25 years. You can’t be prouder of a company’s commitment to an honest day’s work and family values when you are placing your order for fabricating new wooden windows.
Wooden Windows For Historic Homes
Especially using the highest grade materials using solid wood joinery. 150 or 200 years ago when your historic home was built they held to the highest standards they knew as a matter of pride in their work and their craftsmanship. Sure your windows are worn and maybe worn out, but 100 plus years proves the quality and integrity of that craftsmanship. We have seen warped an worn vinyl windows stuck in their frames within a year or two of placement in the direct Virginia Sun. Wood insulates very well and while it does require yearly maintenance – properly cared for they will last longer than most modern materials.
Aesthetic Wooden Windows Fabricated new
Wood is durable. Wood is stable. Wood is warm. Wood breathes. Wood is beautiful. Wood feels nice. Wood is honest.
Wood windows have that classic and rustic feel to them due to their material. Different shades of wood styled in the antiquated ways similar to old houses help homeowners to replace old windows freely. With wood window replacements, frequent maintenance and adjustment can easily be done by homeowners. Certain window types give off different atmospheres. Wood windows give off a classic vibe that can match any old home without looking out of place. If you are not convinced that your investment will last, take a look at any of the buildings or sites close to you on the National Register of Historic places in Virginia and note all the windows are made of wood.
Keeping your old windows and restoring them is the green thing to do. Why throw the old windows into a landfill when they could be restored and given a new life? It’s much more environmentally friendly to keep the old windows.
Northern VA Historic Window Craftsmen
The energy efficiency of restored and weather-stripped windows- when combined with a decent storm window- is usually pretty close to that of a typical replacement window. Gepetto Craftsmen carefully and skillfully glaze the windows for modern energy efficiency.
Complex Historic Window Restoration Contractor
The payback period for new replacement windows- the number of years it will take to recoup the expense of the windows through the energy savings- can be as long as 40-60 years becuase the energy savings per window is so small. It usually doesn’t make sense economically to replace old windows.
After 120 years, any product will look worn. What you don’t see in your wooden windows is what they look like refurbished: wood repaired where soft, stripped and repainted, clean putty applied, new glass where broken, weatherstripped and replaned to close tight as a drum. When its weights are balanced, a repaired window glides up and down in its frame with two fingers and stays open at any height you like. The top sash slides up and down, too, for those summer days you want to let the hot air out from upstairs.
When combined with an exterior storm window, refurbished windows perform as well as standard replacement windows for energy savings. (Most window replacement companies don’t compare their products to refurbished windows, they compare them to loose, drafty windows before repair). The best part is, your refurbished wooden window will last another century before it needs to go into the shop with a little bit of care, such as spot painting and replacing the puddy every 30 years. Most stardard replacement windows are expected to last 5 to 20 years before they warp, crack or de-gas — and they can’t be repaired. Failed replacement windows must be torn out, thrown out, and replaced each time they fail. When you restore your wooden windows, not only do you preserve the ancient slow-growth wood they’re made out of, but nothing goes into the landfill. If you pay to have your windows repaired, your money stays in the local economy.
