What is Millwork?

mill•work

(ˈmɪlˌwɜrk)

n.

1. ready-made carpentry work from a mill.

2. work done in a mill.

3. finished woodwork, as moldings.

A longtime fixture in the architectural woodwork industry, Gepetto Millworks has been recognized throughout its 20-year history for many of its high-profile projects around Richmond. I found Matthew’s expertise indispensable in adding fine woodworking to my custom home projects. The classy flair of real wood is an authentic element that manufactured homes can never fake.

“Millwork” refers to the stuff traditionally made in a mill. Items such as base trim, crown molding, interior doors, door frames, window casing, chair rails and wood paneling are all examples of millwork. These items are all cut and created from raw lumber – in a sawmill – thus, giving them the umbrella term “millwork.” Millwork may also include decorative products, such as mantels and door casings. Millwork can be made from common woods such as pine and oak, but it may also include uncommon woods such as fir, poplar, hickory and maple. Some manufactured wood products also have a high enough density to be used for millwork, such as MDF. Millwork products only need nails, screws or adhesives to be installed, which makes using them easy and convenient. Millwork can be at standard lengths and can be stained or painted.

Architectural millwork does not have to necessarily be built-in to a structure. It can be a free-standing piece such as this rolling kitchen island (pictured right) that South Shore Millwork built for a home on the South Shore. Not to mention architectural millwork can be either stock (“off-the-shelf”), semi-custom, or custom such as what South Shore Millwork provides.

Price Per Square Foot

According to Remodeling Magazine, the average home-office renovation runs $187.50 per square foot. This includes new cabinetry, countertops, added storage space, new carpeting, new drywall and modernized electrical wiring. You can find square footage by multiplying the length of a room by its width. Example: a 12-foot-by-12-foot room amounts to 144 square feet. The cost for renovation using Remodeling Magazine’s average figure would be 144 times $187.50, or $27,000.

Architectural Millwork for Office Interior Build Out

Now, the walls are coming down. Driven by changing work styles, mobile technology, and the growing presence of Millennials—people born between the early 1980s and 2000—today’s workplaces are changing, mostly for the better. Perimeter offices are disappearing, floor plans are opening up, and trendy breakout areas and cafés are replacing the rigid, closed layouts of the past, says Barry Fries, founder and CEO of contractor B.R. Fries & Associates. “More than ever, we see young companies owned or dominated by Millennials gravitating toward historic downtown buildings, where they’re installing sustainable, laid-back interiors with adaptable furniture systems and a surprisingly high finish quality,” he says.

Rustic Country Restaurant Construction

by Gepetto Millworks | Jul 7, 2016 | Restaurant Fittings

Countryside tourists visiting the blue ridge mountains and countryside enjoy a stopoff at the Old Toad Pub.

Rustic Design

The rustic ideal and design theme were desired in this project to attract the weekender tourists from the Washington DC, Baltimore, and Richmond metro areas spend an accessible and enjoyable weekend at a nice countryside bed and breakfast or tour the local wineries near Charlottesville VA. The reclaimed barn wood facing used on the bar was taken from a barn not twelve miles from the restaurant’s location. Defined, rustic style is a design emphasis on rugged, natural beauty. It embraces nature-inspired textures, simple and earthy colors, and ultimately an unpretentious, organic warmth. Rustic style proves the old adage that everything comes full circle. Our pioneer ancestors would get a good laugh out of how fashionable the look is today — they probably dreamed of plastered walls instead of rough logs and carpets instead of bare plank floors. But thanks to rustic style’s unpretentious roots, organic textures and shapes, and natural warmth, it’s become as popular in the heart of the city as it is out in the woods. Rustic interiors derive their warmth and heart from the sense of history and simplicity they evoke. They have a rough-hewn charm that appeals to us in this era of slick technology and manufactured materials. Not to say they lack innovation, though—the make-do spirit that spawned rustic style persists, resulting in one-of-a-kind objects repurposed in delightful ways.

Hardwood Craftsmanship

Gepetto Craftsmen finished out the bar design to serve both the drinking patrons and also the speed and accessibility of the staff serving the drinks day in and day out. The L shaped bar with service corner helps separate the bar area from the seated dining area. Our commitment to solid wood as a craft shows through in every polished inch of the bartop surface! A proprietary mix of curing, polishing and chemical finishes builds a deep luster on top of the gorgeous wood grain that you won’t hesitate to serve, spill or clean on top of. Solid Wood Bar Builder

Country artisans directed the making of this solid wood bar from a barn reclaimed just 12 miles from the restaurant site. Service friendly fittings including ceiling mounted shelving and signage juxtapose rustic charm with design elements for speedy and efficient service by the staff. Creating an L-shaped bar encourages the conversation to flow allowing guests to face each other without interrupting the busy ‘mixologist’. The “L” shape divides the bar service area from the restaurant seating area.

History Happened Here

National and global events all happened somewhere, and historical markers mark Frontiersman, soldier, writer, astronaut, Frontiersman, Soldier, Writer, Astronaut the place where many occurred. But the richness of history is in its local details, details that can be insignificant on the global stage: the home of an individual who made a difference; a natural feature, building, byway; or just something interesting that happened nearby. History is not just about the high and mighty.
