Historic warehouse renovation happens to be a specialty of ours because of Richmond’s tobacco row. Located just below the rapids of the James River, and dating even to before the civil war the center of the tobacco industry was housed in this mostly brick structures. The tobacco grown all through the south was transported to Richmond for processing and distribution. The Renaissance or Richmond’s old industrial district into office, restaurant/retail, & living spaces has driven our market from the beginning. Pictured above in the video is a three story spiral staircase. Built by Gepetto in a renovated warehouse in the old tobacco row of Richmond’s downtown the steel and wood staircase connects the office and restaurant spaces with a finished architectural element connecting the levels together. The historic wooden floors were matched with antiquing techniques to add visual harmony to the newly constructed staircase. It is pretty funny to see our guys beating some wear marks into brand new flooring, but the the solid beam stair treads can definitely handle it!

This warehouse renovation chose a spiral staircase design to connect the landings of each level.
Gepetto craftsmen managed the design, steel fabrication and solid wood tread construction. A millwork specialist is a job site peacemaker. We have used solid wood joinery with the center column in several projects, but here we blended the the flexibility and strength of steel to meet the architectural needs of this project. The three levels of the Ladybird Hat Factory renovation were connected with this spiral staircase built around the elevator shaft. The new addition of an elevator to this late 19th century building left us plenty of structural integrity from which to hang the floating staircase. The extra large internal diameter allowed us to use a lower angle between steps as we completed the arc between levels. Walk in sometime to experience how the arc of the staircase moves through the space. Complete the turn on solid wood planks as you rise from level to level and feel the craftsmanship that we intended.
